With the holiday season in full swing, the start of December is typically filled with shopping trips, planning visits to see family, and perhaps even dreams of a white Christmas – not thoughts of mortgage rates. But the latter is a difficult topic to avoid, especially if you’ve got a new home on your Christmas list.
Temperatures Aren’t the Only Thing Dropping – Mortgage Rates Have Fallen for the Second Week in a Row
According to Freddie Mac, the average 30-year-fixed was around 6.58% for the week ending November 23rd. Is this enough to bring out the ghost of frenzied housing markets past? We certainly saw that over the summer, but whether or not the pattern will repeat itself is still a bit foggy. This week, home prices still rose - but at a glacially slower pace. Mortgage applications have also risen in the past two weeks. Apparently, prospective buyers haven’t settled down for a long winter’s nap and are ready to jump as soon as the time is right.
Despite the Good News About Mortgage Rates and Home Prices, Home Sellers Are Still on Ice
Compared to a year ago, homebuyers have less new listings to consider. But there is more overall inventory, and with homes sitting on the market longer, buyers can take their time browsing for real estate deals. Sellers are more willing to negotiate and offer concessions – possibly even buying down the mortgage rate!
